Farewell Pushbullet, we barely knew thee!

Greetings!

It’s been a while since I posted an update related to the WHMCS Notify Extended module development, but that is not the focus of this entry. I will say though that development is still ongoing, and I expect beta testing to conclude at the end of September. At that point, I’ll do some RC testing and have the version released to the public . Most likely Q4 of 2021, Q1 2022 at the latest.

The focus of this entry is more about a removal from the pack. In the newer module, Pushbullet will be removed from notification methods, for a number of reasons. I’ll go over these one by one here in this entry.

1: Testing Ability
One of the most important things in development is being able to test the software you’re developing. Given that Pushbullet makes it rather hard to do so, and can be confusing to the end user, it is just no longer feasible to maintain this notification method in WHMCS Notify Extended.

2: Removal of functionality
Whether it’s the iOs app being removed from the store, the Facebook login being removed, or something else, it appears that Pushbullet has simply geared more towards removing functionality over the past few years. Of course, they blame someone else for this (Facebook, Apple), but realistically, it’s all them. This ties in with #1 as well, given that the primary testing done is with iOS (though Android is available)

#3: Incompatibility
With the updated method of handling things in the new module, WHMCS Notify Extended has simplified a lot of things where it comes to notification methods, and this is a good thing. Unfortunately, there just doesn’t seem to be a valid, up to date package for Pushbullet that doesn’t break updated WHMCS. At some point in later v7, WHMCS changed a module which would break if the pushbullet package was enabled, and a more appropriate package could not be found.

I understand that removing functionality is not ideal, and a lot of research was put into this before finally just removing the option altogether. In the future, if something comes up where Pushbullet will be able to be added again, this will definitely be done. However, right now, it’s not possible. Not to worry though, as new methods have been added, even a few surprise methods.
